Corcoran Gallery of Art

Corcoran Gallery of Art The Corcoran Gallery of Art was a historic art museum at 500 17th Street NW in Washington, D.C., founded in 1869 by banker and philanthropist William Wilson Corcoran. Recognized as the first American institution established specifically as an art museum, it became an important center for American art before closing as an independent museum in 2014. Artistic legacy and notable artists The Corcoran was particularly celebrated for its American paintings, sculpture, photography, and contemporary art exhibitions. Its collection and influential Corcoran Biennial connected generations of artists, from nineteenth-century landscape painters to major twentieth-century figures. Its monumental stone facade and elaborate interiors reflect the grandeur of nineteenth-century cultural institutions. The 1928 Clark Wing introduced additional exhibition spaces, including the ornate Salon Doré and Rotunda. The building became a National Historic Landmark in 1992. Closure and preservation Financial difficulties led to the museum's closure in 2014, ending nearly 150 years of institutional history. The National Gallery of Art subsequently acquired more than 9,000 objects from its collection, preserving important works for public access and research. Meanwhile, George Washington University assumed responsibility for the historic building and affiliated art school. Visiting the Corcoran today The original museum no longer operates independently, but its building houses the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design at GW, which offers arts education and public exhibitions. The National Gallery of Art also maintains a dedicated Corcoran Collection gallery in its West Building, where admission is free. These two locations provide different opportunities to experience the Corcoran's architectural and artistic legacy.
