We still have a few more weeks of summer to enjoy before the back to school season reaches its peak. For those looking to soak up days at the beach long after the first day of school, consider adding a horseback activity to the itinerary. Silver Lake State Park is inviting visitors to enjoy its off season at Silver Lake Sand Dunes with shoreline horseback riding. Riders can make reservations as early as Sept. 1. Beach days in Ludington just got a bit more fun with the addition of two new games. Friends of Ludington Police announced that 9-Square in the Air and Gaga Ball are now available at Stearns Park. Balls for both games are available to borrow from the Ludington Area Jaycee’s Mini Golf Course from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. |

Back-to-school shopping 2025: Michigan families face rising costs |
School supply costs: It's almost back-to-school season and parents are facing rising costs on school supplies. According to a July report from Intuit Credit Karma, more than one-third of adults surveyed with at least one child attending a K-12 school this fall said they couldn’t afford back-to-school shopping this year. About 44% of them planned to take on debt, up from 34% in 2024, while 54% expected to sacrifice other household necessities. Teacher pay: Grand Rapids Public Schools announced a wage proposal on Monday that district leaders said would result in an average 4.5% raise for teachers. But the Grand Rapids Education Association—the union for teachers and other staff—is questioning the accuracy of the numbersreleased Aug. 11, a week before the start of the 2025-26 school year. Related: A Christian school near Ann Arbor was on the verge of closure. Now enrollment has tripled. |

Fish stocking by the numbers: 19M fish added to Michigan fisheries |
Looking at the numbers: Michigan’s spring and summer fish stocking efforts have delivered nearly 19 million fish to 716 sites across the state – promising stellar fall opportunities for anglers. Fish stocking is part of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ fisheries management, helping to provide quality fishing across the state. Take a look at Michigan’s spring and summer fish stocking by the numbers here. Wildlife officials say the extremely rare Karner blue butterfly is making an important comeback in Michigan. Scientists found several of the federally endangered insects this summer in a habitat restoration plot near the Muskegon River. The return of this colorful butterfly, with its silver and blue to violet-colored wings, tells conservation officials that their oak-pine savanna habitat restoration efforts are working. Pulling the plug: The Trump administration is canceling a $156 million grant that was awarded last year to fund rooftop solar energy panels at low-to-middle income homes, businesses and government buildings in Michigan. |
